A Week in Kourtnee’s World, Lord, When Will It End?
7-17-97, 8:15 PM
Martin and I returned from the store.
When Martin went into the store, he was trying to buy up the whole store.
I had to keep reminding him that we were at the store for me to buy
something for Kourtnee. I had $80.00
because Mrs. Jackson had given me $20.00 each morning this week.
I ended up getting Kourtnee a card with a butterfly on it and some
flowers. Martin talked me into
getting some different flowers than the ones I wanted to get. Martin actually made me feel better.
He had me laughing. The lady
who checked us out told Martin that his daughter was very pretty.
Martin hugged me and smiled really big.
I made a face. Martin walked into the house and yelled Mrs. Jackson’s
name. Mrs. Jackson walked out of the
kitchen and hugged Martin. I was
still standing by the door. Kourtnee
walked out of her room. Neither
Martin nor I had any bags in our hands, so Kourtnee asked us what we bought.
Martin told her to quit being nosey.
Kourtnee looked at me. I
looked at the floor. Mrs. Jackson
spoke to me. I spoke to her.
Kourtnee stared at me more intensely.
Mrs. Jackson came to my rescue and told Kourtnee to leave me alone.
Martin drug Kourtnee into the family room.
Mrs. Jackson followed. I
waited a few minutes, and then I went back outside to Martin’s car and got the
stuff I bought for Kourtnee. I took
it into the house. I put the flowers
and the card on Kourtnee’s dresser after I signed it.
I left Kourtnee’s room. I handed Martin his keys after I walked into the family
room. Kourtnee scowled at me.
I looked at the floor. I was
feeling good about getting her the card and flowers.
After Kourtnee scowled at me, I wanted to go to my room.
I left the family room. I
heard Martin tell Kourtnee that she was being mean. At 8:45 PM, I heard a knock on my door.
I opened the door. It was
Martin. Martin:
Hey, baby girl. I just came
to tell you bye. LaDawnya:
You are leaving already. Martin:
Yep, I have to get up early tomorrow. LaDawnya:
Ok, thanks for taking me to the store. Martin:
No problem. LaDawnya:
Are you coming over tomorrow? Martin:
I am not sure. LaDawnya:
Ok, see you later. Martin:
Bye. Martin walked down the stairs.
I went to the edge of the banister to watch Martin leave.
Kourtnee was standing at the bottom of the stairs.
When I saw her, I went back into my room.
Martin yelled bye to me again before he left. Kourtnee walked into my room.
I was sitting at my desk writing. She
laid down on my bed. Kourtnee:
Who were you talking to at church? LaDawnya:
Evg. Vanessa Butler Kourtnee:
What did you all talk about? LaDawnya:
She asked who I was, why I was still in the sanctuary.
She told me to call you. She
told me about her foster mother. Kourtnee:
What did she tell you about her foster mother? LaDawnya:
Some stuff. Kourtnee:
Like what. LaDawnya:
I don’t remember. Just some
stuff. Could you please just leave
me alone? Kourtnee:
I am just trying to talk to you. LaDawnya:
I don’t feel like talking to you. Kourtnee huffed as she walked out of my room.
I dropped my pencil on the paper and put my head in my hands.
Was this day ever going to be over? |
