I had been filing as if I had lost my mind for over an hour. The stack of papers was getting smaller and smaller. It was very encouraging. I hadn't paid any attention to Kourtnee. She hadn't paid any attention to me either. I heard Kourtnee say, "LaDawnya, come on. It's time to go." I looked at my watch. It was 5:46 PM. I straightened up my work area, got my stuff, and prepared to leave.

We left the Shimmers complex at 6:05 PM. Kourtnee had choir rehearsal at 7:00 PM; so going home was not an option. We went to Rose's Chicken and Such. Rose's Chicken and Such is a fast food chicken restaurant. I was surprised that Kourtnee chose to eat there. We order our food. The guy working the cash register was flirting with Kourtnee the whole time we order our food. Kourtnee looked like she was enjoying all the attention she was getting. I smiled. We had our food. We went to a table and sat down to eat.

LaDawnya: I want Colt as my daddy, if I have a say in the matter.

Kourtnee: What are you talking about?

I looked towards the guy that had been flirting with Kourtnee. She looked in the same direction and started laughing.

Kourtnee: I am not thinking about you. You are so silly.

LaDawnya: I just thought I would voice my opinion on the subject.

Kourtnee: I already know how you feel. I know you are crazy about Colt.

LaDawnya: How did you and Colt meet?

Kourtnee: I do not want to talk about Colt.

LaDawnya: Why not?

She gives me a look that says, "You are getting on my nerves."

Kourtnee: I do not want to talk about him.

LaDawnya: I think he still likes you.

Kourtnee: Have you written any of your report about hanging out with me?

I smiled.

LaDawnya: Kourtnee said, as she changed the subject.

Kourtnee: You are not funny. Answer my question.

LaDawnya: Not yet.

Kourtnee: Why not?

LaDawnya: I don't know.

Kourtnee: What do you know?

LaDawnya: That Colt still likes you.

She gives me that look again.

Kourtnee: Go ahead and eat so we can go to church.

Kourtnee didn't say anything else to me while we ate.
