A Week in Kourtnee's World, the Millionaress and the Middle Class Working Man

7-15-97, 9:56 PM

Kourtnee picked up the phone and dialed Paula's number. It had thrown her for a loop when LaDawnya told her that she would need some feminine hygiene products. Paula's husband, Rick MaCulvie, answered the phone.

Rick: Hello.

Kourtnee: Hello, Rick. How are you doing?

Rick: I am fine. How about you?

Kourtnee: I'm fine.

Rick: I don't suppose you called to talk to me.

Kourtnee: (She laughs). No, I called to talk to Paula.

Rick: One of these days, you are gonna call to talk to me. (He laughs.)

Kourtnee: Maybe I will.

Rick: I hear you have a foster daughter.

Kourtnee: Yes, I do. She is a handful sometimes, too.

Rick: I heard. Paula has told me about a couple of their adventures.

Kourtnee: She can tend to get into precarious situations from time to time.

Rick: Let me go get Paula for you. It was nice talking to you.

Kourtnee: Thanks. It was nice talking to you, too.

Paula: This is becoming a regular habit with you, calling this late at night.

Kourtnee: Hello to you, too.

Paula: Oops. Hello. This is becoming a regular habit with you, calling this late at night.

Kourtnee: Very funny.

Paula: I know. What has LaDawnya done now?

Kourtnee: What makes you think that LaDawnya has done something?

Paula: Please. What has the child done now?

Kourtnee: Well, she wants to know about Colt and me, for one. She also told me that she needs some feminine hygiene products. I froze completely when she said that.

Paula laughs very loudly.

Paula: Oh my goodness. What brought that on?

Kourtnee: She went to the PV31 meeting at church tonight and they discussed personal hygiene and the female body.

Paula: Oh. Why did you freeze on her?

Kourtnee: I guess I never expected her to just announce it like that. I didn't expect her to tell me that on the drive home from church.

Paula: You are silly. How did she act when she told you?

Kourtnee: She had that sweet, innocent look that she gets when she is in trouble.

Paula: (Laughing again.) She can do that look well.

Kourtnee: We are going tomorrow to get her some.

Paula: Ok. Now, about you and Colt.

Kourtnee: Don't start. I still for the life of me cannot figure out why or how she found Colt. Out of all the people at Shimmers, she finds Colt. Tonight she said that she wants Colt to be her Daddy. What am I supposed to say to that?

Paula: Maybe you and Colt are supposed to be together. Why did she say that she wants Colt to be her Daddy?

Kourtnee: You sound like Colt.

Paula: You and Colt talked about this?

Kourtnee: Yes, on Monday night.

Paula: Why am I just now hearing about this? See I knew it. As soon as that child walked into your life, things were going to change.

Kourtnee: Nothing has changed. I have had other things on my mind.

Paula: Oh, yea, like your ex-boyfriend. Why did LaDawnya say that she wants Colt to be her Daddy?

Kourtnee: You are loving this, aren't you? Some guy at Rose's Chicken and Such was flirting with me.

Paula: Of course, I am loving this. What does LaDawnya want to know about Colt?

Kourtnee: She wants to know how we met, why we broke up, and stuff like that.

Paula: Tell her then.

Kourtnee: You know I hate reliving the past.

Paula: Your present has made your past a part of your life now.

Kourtnee: The great philosopher, Paula.

Paula: Of course. I have words of wisdom for all. All kids want to know how their parents met. Kids are nosey like that. You can either tell her or not tell her. That's the only two choices you have. If you don't tell her, then she is going to ask Colt.

Kourtnee: Probably. Colt is not her parent, I am. (She groans.) I don't want to tell her about Colt and me.

Paula: Oh my goodness did Prissy just use improper English?

Kourtnee: Do not call me that!

Paula: Sorry. You are just scared that if you go to talking about Colt, then those old feelings you had for him will resurface. You know you still love him. Kourtnee and Colt sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I…

Kourtnee: Quit that. I do not still love him.

Paula: According to LaDawnya, Colt is her Daddy. It won't be long before she is calling him Daddy. If you don't still love him, you still have feelings for him.

Kourtnee: Maybe, I do still have feelings for him.

Paula: Told ya!

Kourtnee: You are enjoying this a little too much.

Paula: This is so wonderful. Just like a soap opera. The beautiful millionaress still has a flame glowing for a middle class working man. No one believes that the relationship will work, except for the millionaress' beautiful best friend and confidant. The millionaress goes on with her life pretending that she does not long for her middle class working man to hold her in his strong arms. Tune in tomorrow to see what will happen when the millionaress' foster daughter asks, "Mommy, why isn't Colt my Daddy?"

Paula and Kourtnee both laugh.

Kourtnee: You need some serious help.

Paula: So, do you.

Kourtnee: I gotta go. Bye.

Paula: Bye. See you tomorrow, millionaress.

Kourtnee: Ok, beautiful best friend and confidant.

They both hung up the phone laughing.
