A Week In Kourtnee’s World, A Visitor, Rather Two Visitors, This Could Be Trouble

7-18-97, 3:00 PM

I had been goofing off for most of the day. At one point, Kourtnee told me that I looked well enough to go to work. I laid down on my bed and played like I was going to sleep. Kourtnee flopped down on the bed beside me and told me that she knew I wasn’t sleep.

Kourtnee: Martin called. He is on his way over here.

LaDawnya: Why?

Kourtnee: Because he wants to check on you.

LaDawnya: Why?

Kourtnee: I don’t know. You will have to ask him.

LaDawnya: I don’t want him checking on me.

Kourtnee: Well, it’s too late. He is on his way over here.

I made a face.

Kourtnee: Stop making faces.

I made another face.

Kourtnee: Girl, stop making faces.

I didn’t say anything. I rolled over so that my back was to Kourtnee. She tapped me on my shoulder. I ignored her. She leaned over and kissed me on the jaw. She got up from the bed. As she left my room, she told me to put some clothes on. I was still in my pajamas. I was tempted to stay in my pjs and see what happened.

3:32 PM

I had changed clothes. I had on a pair of yellow shorts and a white t-shirt. I went downstairs and walked into Kourtnee’s room. She took one look at me and scowled. She said, “Girl, what are you wearing? Go upstairs and put on another shirt.” I looked at her and asked, “What’s wrong with my shirt?” She looked at me and said, “Don’t start. Just go put on another shirt.” I blew a long hard breath and walked out of the room. There was nothing wrong with my t-shirt. I made it to my room. I just sat down on the bed.

I was sitting on my bed when Kourtnee walked into my room. She looked at me. She went into my closet. She came back out with a white sleeveless shirt. She told me to put it on. I opened my mouth to say something. Kourtnee cut me off and told me not to start. She told me to just put the shirt on. I took off my t-shirt and put the shirt that Kourtnee had given me on. Kourtnee told me to smile. I just looked down at the floor. Kourtnee was about to say something when the doorbell rang. She smiled and dashed out of my room, downstairs, like she was a teenage girl.

At the Front Door

Kourtnee hugged Martin. They finished their embrace. Martin looked at Kourtnee before he began his conversation with her.

Martin: Where is LaDawnya?

Kourtnee: She is still upstairs. I don’t think she is too happy about you coming over here.

Martin: Why is that?

Kourtnee: It has something to do with Colt Austin.

Martin: The guy who stole you from me.

Kourtnee: Cute.

Martin: How come you all never got married?

Kourtnee: Did you come over here to discuss my love life?

Martin: Nope, I was just asking a question.

Kourtnee: You can go wait in the family room while I go get LaDawnya.

Martin: You have too many rooms in this house.

Kourtnee smiled as she walked towards the stairs.

Upstairs in LaDawnya’s Room

Kourtnee walked into my room. I was lying on the bed. She told me that Martin was downstairs and to come on. I just looked at her. She tilted her head and sat down on the bed. I was expecting a long drawn out sermon. She sat there for a few seconds. She stood up and told me to come downstairs whenever I was ready to and then she walked out of the room. I sat up on the bed and rolled my eyes. It hit me that I hadn’t opened the box that Martin had given me. It was sitting on my desk. When I opened it up, it was a silver necklace with a heart pendant on it. I had a thing for hearts. I smiled and put the necklace on.

Downstairs in the Family Room

I finally made it downstairs. When I walked into the family room, Kourtnee’s hair was shaking and she was laughing. I almost started to go back up to my room, but Martin turned around and saw me. He acted happy to see me. I walked into the family room and purposely sat in the love seat that was farthest away from Kourtnee and Martin.

Martin smiled as he commented about me still not liking him. I stared out the window. Mrs. Jackson walked into the room. We all turned towards her as she asked Martin if he wanted to stay for dinner. Martin looked at Kourtnee, then at me. Kourtnee said that it was ok. I didn’t make a move. I just looked at Mrs. Jackson. Mrs. Jackson smiled at me and then left the family room.

Martin, Kourtnee, and I sat in the room for awhile. Martin kept talking and telling jokes. Kourtnee kept laughing at everything he said. I just stared out the window. I laughed a few times, but I made sure that Kourtnee and Martin couldn’t see me.

4:13 PM

The doorbell rang. I jumped up and said that I would get it. I ran to the door, just barely missing running into Mrs. Jackson. She told me to stop running and then went back into her bedroom.

I opened the door. It was Colt. I gawked at him. He tapped me on my nose and asked me why I was just standing there. I came out of my trance. I walked outside and closed the front door behind me.

LaDawnya: What are you doing here?

Colt: I heard that you were sick and I came by to check on you.

LaDawnya: You should have called first.

Colt: Is there something wrong?

I looked at the front door. How was I going to explain that Martin was in the house?

LaDawnya: No.

Colt: Well, then why are we standing our here on the porch.

I shrugged my shoulders.

LaDawnya: I don’t know.

Colt: Are you gonna let me in?

I scratched my ear.

Colt: LaDawnya, what is wrong with you?

I didn’t have a chance to answer because the door opened and Kourtnee walked outside. She looked more shocked than I had when she saw Colt.

Colt: Hello, Kourtnee. LaDawnya won’t let me in.

Kourtnee: Hey, Colt. Why didn’t you call first?

Colt: We’ve already been through this. What do I have to do to get invited into the house?

Both Kourtnee and I looked at each other. For some strange reason Colt was not getting the message. Colt pushed past both of us and walked into the house. Kourtnee tried to stop him, but it wasn’t working. Kourtnee and I walked into the house behind Colt. Martin walked out of the family room and asked who was at the door. He stopped talking when he saw Colt. Colt turned and looked at Kourtnee. Colt walked towards the front door without saying a word. I walked behind him as he exited out the front door.

Colt: Why didn’t you tell me that he was in there?

LaDawnya: I didn’t get a chance to.

Colt: What is he doing over here?

LaDawnya: He came over here to check on me.

Colt: Yea, whatever, I’m leaving.

I had no idea what to do. I was glad when Kourtnee came outside. Kourtnee told me to go into the house. I didn’t want to, but I went into the house. I stood by the front door hoping that I could hear what Kourtnee and Colt were saying.

On the Front Porch

Colt: I guess I will make sure that I call before I come over here from now on!

Kourtnee: Colt, you don’t have to be like that.

Colt: Tell, LaDawnya that I will call her later on.

Kourtnee: So, that’s it, you’re just gonna leave.

Colt: What do you want me to do? Stay here and act like I am happy.

Kourtnee: LaDawnya would probably rather that you were here than Martin. If you want to stay you can.

Colt: I don’t believe this. I figured you would have been glad that I was leaving.

Kourtnee: You know what; I was trying to be nice. If you want to leave, just leave! I’ll tell LaDawnya what you said.

Colt: I know you are not pushing this off on me. You are more trouble than you are worth. I wish… Never mind, I’m gone.

Colt started walking towards his car.

Kourtnee: Whatever! You’re just jealous.

Colt stopped walking, turned around, and walked back towards Kourtnee.

Colt: What did you just say!?

Kourtnee: You heard what I said.

Colt: I have never been jealous of that skinny, no talent, bad joke telling fool. If you want to be with him that’s your business!

Kourtnee: Yes, it is my business.

Colt: You are getting on my nerves. I wish I had never met LaDawnya.

Kourtnee looked startled.

Kourtnee: It would be best if you just left.

Kourtnee left Colt standing on the porch and walked back into the house.

Inside the House, By the Front Door

I heard the whole conversation between Kourtnee and Colt. They were both mad at each other. I almost went outside when Colt walked back up to Kourtnee. He looked like he was mad enough to do something intense. He didn’t. he just said some mean things about Martin. Kourtnee responded back. My heart dropped when I heard Colt say that he wished he had never met me. I couldn’t believe he said that. I stormed upstairs to my room, slammed the door, slumped onto my bed, and cried.

Downstairs in the Family Room

Kourtnee walked into the family room. She looked upset. Martin asked her if everything was ok. Kourtnee told him yes, although she was lying. Martin didn’t need to be bothered with the discord in her life. Martin told a joke to ease the tension, but Kourtnee didn’t smile. Kourtnee asked Martin where LaDawnya was. Martin said that he hadn’t seen her. Kourtnee apologized to Martin and asked him could they have dinner some other time. Martin said yes. Martin hugged Kourtnee and told her goodbye. He told her to tell LaDawnya goodbye. Kourtnee said that she would as she walked Martin to the front door.

After Martin left, Kourtnee closed the door. She leaned on the door and thought, “Lord, if I would have known that all of this was going to happen this week, I wouldn’t have let LaDawnya come to work with me.”

Kourtnee walked into Mrs. Jackson’s room. Before Kourtnee could tell Mrs. Jackson that Martin wasn’t staying for dinner, Mrs. Jackson nodded. Kourtnee knew that Mrs. Jackson already knew what was happening. Mrs. Jackson told Kourtnee that LaDawnya had gone upstairs to her room. Kourtnee headed upstairs to LaDawnya’s room.
