A Week In Kourtnee’s World, Mama, You Don’t have to Come Up Here

7-18-97, 8:45 PM

At Colt’s House

Colt had to do the one thing that he knew he didn’t want to do. He had to call his mother to find out what to do about what had happened between him, Kourtnee, and LaDawnya. How was he supposed to have known that LaDawnya was listening at the door? Colt picked up the phone and called his mother.

Monica: Hello.

Colt: Hey Mama.

Monica: Boy, you sound bad. What’s wrong with you?

Colt: I messed up.

Monica: Messed up what?

Colt: I went over to Kourtnee's house and Martin Nance was there.

Monica: Isn't Martin that guy that liked Kourtnee, too?

Colt: Yes, mame.

Monica: Did you call before you went over to Kourtnee's house?

Colt: No, mame.

Monica: Why not?

Colt: I wasn’t expecting anyone to be over there. I was just going to see LaDawnya because she was sick.

Monica: You know better than that. You should have called first. What happened?

Colt: Well, uhh.

Monica: Oh, Lord, uhh. This is bad.

Colt: Mama, would you let me finish?

Monica: Gone, child.

Colt: LaDawnya tried to stop me and Kourtnee tried to stop me, but I walked into the house without being invited.

Monica: No, you didn't.

Colt: Yes, mame. I did.

Monica: Colt, you know better.

Colt: Can I finish?

Monica: Gone, child.

Colt: When I walked in, Martin walked out of the living room. I froze when I saw him. I told them that I was leaving. Kourtnee and LaDawnya followed me outside. Kourtnee told LaDawnya to go back in the house and then we had a discussion. Apparently, LaDawnya was listening at the door.

Monica: Don't tell me you said something stupid and that child heard you.

Colt: Yes, mame, I did.

Monica: What did you say?

Colt: Uhh, I said that I wish I had never met LaDawnya.

Monica: Boy, please tell me that your silly behind did not say something that stupid. Have you plumb lost your mind? You shouldn't have said something like that to Kourtnee irregardless of whether LaDawnya was listening or not. That has got to be one of the dumbest things I have ever heard you say.

Colt: That's not all.

Monica: You couldn't have possibly done anything else.

Colt: I did.

Monica: What!?

Colt: Kourtnee called me to tell me that LaDawnya had heard me and I acted like I didn't care.

Monica: Why on earth would you do something like that?

Colt: I was mad at her because Martin was over at her house. I was just mad. She told me that she didn't want me to see LaDawnya anymore.

Monica: She should have. She should have driven over to your house and slapped you!

Colt: Mama, I know. I need to know how to fix this.

Monica: I'm supposed to help you fix this.

Colt: Yes, mame.

Monica: Alright. You need to drive down here and pick me up.

Colt: Mama, you don't have to come down here.

Monica: Boy, do not test me. Get your behind on the rode and come pick me up.

Colt: Mama!

Monica: Come down here and get me.

Colt: Yes, mame. Bye.

Monica: Bye.

At Monica’s House

Monica hung up the phone. She couldn’t believe that her son had done something so stupid. She only hoped that she could help fix things.

Monica picked up the phone and dialed Kourtnee’s number.

Kourtnee: Hello.

Monica: Hello. Kourtnee, it's Monica.

Kourtnee: How are you doing?

Monica: I'm fine. Colt called me and told me what happened.

Kourtnee: He did.

Monica: Yes. He is on his way down here to pick me up. I promise that we are going to fix this.

Kourtnee: I am not sure that anything can be done to fix this.

Monica: Don't worry. Everything is gonna work out. Have you tried talking to her about what Colt said?

Kourtnee: I tried, but I doubt if she wants to hear anything that I have to say. It has been a very weird week. Colt isn't the only one who has said something crazy to LaDawnya.

Monica: You mean, you saying how did she know that she would be around that long?

Kourtnee: How did you know about that?

Monica: Colt told me.

Kourtnee: Oh.

Monica: Yea. Both you and Colt need a beating.

Kourtnee: I didn’t mean it like she took it.

Monica: Of course you didn't. She's a child and her parents left her. Mrs. Johnson left her, and the other people in her life are gone. You and Colt are who she latched on to. You all have a responsibility to that child, whether you all want it or not. If ya'll let that child down now, who knows how she will react. You and Colt have to be careful with her.

Kourtnee: How am I supposed to know all that?

Monica: You should have thought about that before you decided to take on the responsibility.

Kourtnee: Yes, mame.

Monica: Don't worry about it. I am on my way down there and I will make sure that everything is fixed.

Kourtnee: You shouldn't have to do that.

Monica: Well, you two don't know what you all are doing. Someone with some sense has to do something.

Kourtnee: Monica that hurt.

Monica: It was supposed to. I will see you tomorrow. Bye.

Kourtnee: Bye.

Monica hung up the phone. She got down on here knees by her bed and prayed that the Lord would touch LaDawnya’s heart and that He would give her the words to say.
