At Colt's House
Kourtnee: Hello.
Colt: Hey, Kourtnee, it's Colt.
Kourtnee: What do you want?
Colt: The wind just got really cold.
Kourtnee: What is it Colt?
Colt: Well, I am going to pick up Mama and I was wondering if you and LaDawnya wanted to ride with me.
Kourtnee: Why would we want to ride with you?
Colt: Kourtnee, I am just asking. Mama wants to come up here to talk to US. I mean, dog gone, I don't want to hear her mouth fussing at me alone, when you're in trouble, too. If LaDawnya is with us, Mama won't fuss too much.
Kourtnee laughed.
Kourtnee: You could always figure out a way to get out of trouble. Alright, come on over here.
Colt: Bye Prissy.
Kourtnee: Don't call me that! Bye!
In LaDawnya's Room
Kourtnee walked into my room. She had this strange look on her face. I figured that something crazy was up. I didn't want to talk to her anyway. She and Colt had gotten on my nerves. They both were...
Kourtnee said my name before I could finish my thought. "Sweetie, Colt is going to Absanie to pick up Monica to bring her back up here. He wants us to ride up there with him. I told him that we would."
That was all I could take. Something inside me snapped and I went off.
"You told him what! I can't believe that you would expect me to go anywhere with him after what he said about me. Are you both crazy or something? Am I just supposed to forget what you all said? I really don't care for either one of you right now!"
Kourtnee responded, "I know you are upset right now, but you need to calm down and watch your mouth!" I scowled, turned my back towards her, and mumbled, "Whatever!" I felt a hand on my shoulder as Kourtnee said, "Look, little girl, you need to watch your mouth. This is the last time that I am going to tell you that!"
I didn't know what to do. I wanted to act a fool, but my upbringing and Mrs. Johnson's words wouldn't let me act like I felt. I just stared at Kourtnee. She stared at me. After a few minutes, she told me to change clothes and then left the room. I hope she really didn't expect me to change clothes, because I wasn't about to.
10:02 PM
The doorbell rang loud, as if the main chime was in my room with me. I knew that it was Colt. I could only wonder what was going to take place.
It was about 10 minutes before Colt and Kourtnee got up to my room. They walked into the room. Kourtnee looked at me in my t-shirt and warm-ups and said, "I thought I told you to change clothes." I kept looking at the ceiling. Colt walked over to the bed and sat down in the chair at my desk. Colt's sweetness was not gonna work on me.
Colt: Are you sure you want my mother to see you looking like that?
LaDawnya: Is she downstairs or something?
Colt: No, we are going to go pick her up.
LaDawnya: Well, I'll change clothes after you all bring her back.
Colt: Are you trying to tell me something?
LaDawnya: Yea, I ain't going with you all!
Kourtnee: LaDawnya, watch your mouth.
I grimaced. I didn't take my eyes off of the paper that was on my desk. I could feel Kourtnee's eye bearing into my back. I didn't care though.
Colt: I just thought that we could all spend some time together plus we could surprise her.
LaDawnya: I don't want to spend any time with either one of you and I doubt that your mother wants to be surprised tonight.
Colt: Kourtnee, already promised that you all were going, so you gotta go or else you're gonna make Kourtnee a liar.
LaDawnya: Do you really think I care?
Kourtnee: Colt, would you excuse us?
From the tone in Kourtnee's voice, I could tell that she was pissed off. Colt quickly got up from the bed and left the room. Kourtnee waked over to me, grabbed my arm, pulled me up, and turned me around so that I was starring her in the face. With a forceful voice, Kourtnee practically yelled, "I am about tire of how you are acting! Your behind is going with us whether you want to or not! Get over there, get some clothes, and put them on! I don't want to hear another word out of your mouth! Do you understand me?" I didn't respond to the question. She bellowed, "I asked you a question!" I looked down at the floor and mumbled a positive although forced response.
I really didn't want to change clothes, but Kourtnee looked like she was about ready to knock me into the next week. I didn't relish the thought of getting hit, so I walked over to the closet. As Kourtnee was walking out of the door, she said, "Don't make me have to pick something else out for you!" Then she left. I just slumped on the bed. I heard Kourtnee's voice shriek, "Ramona, leave her alone!" |
