A Week In Kourtnee's World, Rose Wall Paper & Soap

7/18/97, 11:56 PM

When I woke up, Colt was shaking my shoulder and telling me to get up. I looked up at him and twisted my lips as I flared my nostrils. Colt looked hurt. I didn't care. I had started on a downward spiral of behavior and I was intent on enjoying the ride for as long as possible.

Colt helped me out of the car despite my resistance. I looked around for Kourtnee, but she was not insight. I figured that she was in the house already.

Colt told me to wait a minute. I walked by him as if I had never heard him. He grabbed my arm and said, "Would you please wait!" I glared at him as I responded, "What!" He let my arm go and said, "Just gone in the house." He sounded so dejected.

Mrs. Austin's house was nice and quaint. It looked like a grandmother's house should look. It was made of white brick with rose trim. There were bushes all around the house. The yard was lined with a white brick wall that met the driveway. The driveway was at a slight incline. The neighbor's trees hung over the right side of the driveway giving it a jungle effect. I half expected to hear a lion's roar coming from the neighbor's house. Mrs. Austin's yard was neatly kept, not a blade of grass appeared to be out of place, even in the faint illumination of the street light, you could see Colt's red Pontiac Firebird sticking out of the driveway behind Mrs. Austin's dark blue Mercury Mystique. Mrs. Austin yelled my name and told me to come on in the house.

As I reached the caged in front porch, Mrs. Austin hugged me and held me so tightly that it was as if someone had burst my emotional balloon and all of the tears I had in me began to flow. I stood there on her front porch, lying on her shoulders, wrapped in her arms, boohooing.

I had been crying for a little while when I heard Mrs. Austin say, "I got her Kourtnee. She's alright." I heard the click of Kourtnee's heels walk off. Mrs. Austin finally released her grip of me. I raised my head up off of Mrs. Austin's shoulders. She looked at me and said, "What's on your mind baby?" I said, "Nothing." She brushed my face and said, "Speak ya mind, baby!" I looked in the house to see if Kourtnee was in earshot then said, "Who wears high heeled shoes on a road trip?" Mrs. Austin laughed as she guided me into the front door of her house.

The outside of the house was no indication of the size of the interior of the house. By looking at the front of the house, you would not suspect that the house contained four bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room, a den, a dining room, and a kitchen. The carpet was light rose. The curtain on the patio doors was dark rose with light rose flowers on it. There were four white and rose lamps strategically placed in the four corners of the room. The dark rose leather furniture was arranged through out the living room so that each seat could see the TV that was next to the dinging room table.

The dining room table appeared to seat six comfortably, eight people if necessary. The table, chairs, and armoire that contained the good china all matched. Depending on the way you looked, the wood appeared to be brown or dark red.

Mrs. Austin showed me the kitchen. Kourtnee was standing in front of the refrigerator letting the cold air out. "Kourtnee close my refrigerator door," Mrs. Austin stated as we walked by. Kourtnee looked up just in time to see me walk by. I think she made a face at me. Mrs. Austin must have seen the dejection on my face because she said, "Kourtnee, leave that baby alone." Kourtnee snorted, "What baby?" Mrs. Austin returned, "I thought I told you to get out of my refrigerator!" Kourtnee said, "I am."

I felt like I was watching a tennis match. I think the match was tied. Kourtnee and Mrs. Austin went on for a few more minutes. I became tired of the whole scene, so I tried to leave the kitchen. As I tried to walk by Kourtnee, she step backwards blocking my way. I said, "Excuse me." She didn't respond. I said it again. She still didn't move. I looked at Mrs. Austin. She smiled and walked towards the refrigerator. "Prissy," Mrs. Austin said grabbing the refrigerator door, "get out of my refrigerator and move out of the way!" Mrs. Austin closed the door, pushed me pass Kourtnee, and walked back to the other side of the kitchen. I hurriedly walked down the hallway to avoid any look that Kourtnee might give me.

I peeked my head into the master bedroom. Mrs. Austin's room was rose and white, just like the living room. She had a queen size bed up against the wall next to the window. There was a dresser and TV on a TV stand on the opposite side of the room. Mrs. Austin had a long closet that looked like it had clothes for miles. There was an entrance to the master bathroom on the wall parallel to the closet.

I walked into the bathroom. Mrs. Austin had all kinds of make-up, perfume, and lotion bottles all over the white countertop. The wallpaper in the bathroom was red with roses attached to vines on it. The shower had roses on it. There was a rose shaped soap dish with small rose shaped soaps in it.

I picked up one of the soaps. Behind me I heard Colt's voice say, "Mama's gonna get you if she sees you playing with that soap." I put the soap back in the dish then brushed by Colt as I left the bathroom through the hallway entrance. Colt grabbed my arm, "So, you are just gonna walk past me like I ain't standing here?" Mrs. Austin and Kourtnee must have heard him because they came out of the kitchen. I stood there, not knowing what to do.

Kourtnee broke the silence, "Colt, what's up?" Colt said "Nothing. I was showing LaDawnya the bathroom." Kourtnee, Mrs. Austin and looked at him like he was lying. With 6 female eyes starring right through him, Colt made a quick retreat to the last bedroom in the hallway.

I didn't have a way to escape. Kourtnee walked up to me and asked, "Are you going to tell me what happened?" I shrugged my shoulders. Kourtnee got mad. I dropped my head. "Oh, Lord. How in the world could I have done that? Kourtnee's gonna kill me," I thought as I raised my head. When my eyes met Kourtnee's eyes, a cold hard stare met me. Kourtnee didn't say a word. She just stared at me, then turned and went into the bedroom across from the bathroom and closed the door. That left Mrs. Austin and me in the hallway. Mrs. Austin put her arms on my shoulder and led me into the last bedroom on the left side of the hallway.
