A Tongue Lashing Just Before A Birthday Dinner

7/20/97, 2:05 PM

We are got into our separate cars at the church and then drove to the Stockwell Hall in Hardaway, Maddocha. The Stockwell Hall was a building in the city of Hardaway where a lot of banquets and fancy dinners were held. That was where we were going for Mrs. Adams birthday party.

As we got out of the car, Mrs. Adams walked over to the car where Kourtnee, Colt, Ms. Austin, and I were. Kourtnee mumbled, "Oh, Lord," under her breathe. I looked at her. She had a strange look on her face. The look was not a nice look either. Mrs. Adams said, "Can I speak to the three of you for a moment?" Colt, Kourtnee, and I stopped and waited as Ms. Austin kept on walking towards the building. I went and stood behind Kourtnee. Mrs. Adams began talking, "I do not appreciate the three of you causing a scene in church. Kourtnee, you, and Colt should know better. LaDawnya, I am sure that you know better." Colt responded, "Mrs. Adams, it was my fault. If I wouldn't have been sleep, none of that would have happened." Mrs. Adams said, "I don't care whose fault it was. It shouldn't have happened at all." She didn't wait for anyone to respond, she walked off towards the entrance of the Stockwell Hall.

I leaned up against the car. Kourtnee told me to get off the car before I messed up my clothes. I complied. Colt looked mad. Kourtnee finally said, "Come on, let's go on in there, before Mama sends someone out here to get us." Colt looked at me. We both had the same thought. Didn't neither one of us want to go in there after getting a tongue-lashing. Kourtnee said, "I am not going to stay out here. I am going in the building. You all can stay out here as long as you all want to." She walked off.

Once Kourtnee was out of earshot, Colt said, "You wanna go somewhere else to eat?" I looked at him, "Are you trying to get me killed or something?" He smiled, "you have hung out with Kourtnee too long." I replied, "You are supposed to be a positive influence on me." Colt rolled his eyes, "whatever Monica, Jr. Ain't nobody even ask you that. Come on, since you don't want to have any fun." He grabbed my arm and started towards the building.

Colt and I made it into the building. Kourtnee was standing at the entrance door waiting on us. When we reached her, she said, "What took you all so long? You were supposed to come in here. What were you all doing out there?" I didn't say anything. Colt said, "Good grief woman. We weren't doing anything. I just had to talk LaDawnya out of leaving. That's all." Colt winked at me. I started to say something when Kourtnee said, "Colt, quit it. Come on." She walked off to the left, as Colt and I followed her.
