Kourtnee Adams Visits the Orphanage

Original Date: 4-2-97

It all started on April 2nd. Little did I know, that when I woke up, this day would be one of the best days of my life.

At The Orphanage

I was sitting in the orphanage library reading "Marked by Fire" written by Carol J. Thomas. This orphanage was one of the best orphanages in the state of Maddocha. It not only had a library, but it also had a playground and a gymnasium. It had all the other things that an orphanage should have: rooms, beds, kitchen, bathrooms, etc.

The orphanage was sponsored by Shimmers Incorporated. Shimmers Incorporated was a very prosperous company because almost everyone in Maddocha used Shimmers' products. Kourtnee's great grandfather, Themophilis Adams founded Shimmers. Shimmers Inc. produces hair, body, and skin care products.

It had been rumored for sometime that the Shimmers' owner, Kourtnee Adams, was going to come by the to inspect the orphanage. It must have been true. I looked at the door of the library and I saw Ms. Adams. She was looking around the library. She paused for a moment and looked at me. I smiled at her. She smiled back at me. When she left the library door, I went back to reading my book. I wasn't particularly impressed, but everyone else was excited.

In The Orphanage Director's Office

Ms. Adams went to see Dr. Melez. Dr. Melez was the director of the orphanage. Ms. Adams asked Dr. Melez about the orphanage and what had been going on since her last visit. Dr. Melez told Ms. Adams about the occurrences that had happened since her last visit. She also told Ms. Adams what things were needed. After they had finished discussing business, they began to discuss friendlier topics.

Ms. Adams asked Dr. Melez about the girl who was sitting in the library. Dr. Melez asked Ms. Adams to describe the girl she was talking about. Ms. Adams said, "She is light-skinned, a natural beige color. She has long brown hair and her head was buried in a book." Dr. Melez replied, "You must be talking about LaDawnya Dia Miantay." Ms. Adams said, "How do you know who I am talking about." Dr. Melez replied, "LaDawnya is the only person I know that could sit through a tornado and it wouldn't bother her. She is a wonderful young lady. She is also a very good student she has made straight A's every since the 2nd grade. Why do you ask?" "I don't know. I was just wondering. Do you think I could meet her?" Ms. Adams responded. Dr. Melez said, "I will have her give you a tour of the orphanage. John come here. Go to library and tell LaDawnya to come to my office. Hurry up boy, you move like you have weights on your behind!"

Back in the Library

I had just finished reading my book. I was about to put it up when John told me that Dr. Melez wanted to see me. John told me that I was in trouble, then he started to laugh. "Very funny knuckle head," was my reply. I hurried to Dr. Melez office.

When I walked in Dr. Melez office, I saw Ms. Adams. Dr. Melez introduced us and told me that I was supposed to take Ms. Adams on a tour of the orphanage. I really didn't want to do it. "Did I ask you if you wanted to do it?" Dr. Melez said. I just looked at the floor and said okay. Dr. Melez had a habit of embarrassing people. I did not want to be embarrassed in front of Ms. Adams.

Ms. Adams and I walked out of Dr. Melez office. After a few minutes, she told me that I could call her Kourtnee. I said okay, although I was a little uncomfortable about doing that. Kourtnee was a tall stately woman. She looked much older than her 31 years of age. She walked as if she were the most powerful and richest woman in the world, but she had a sweetness about her that made you just want to talk to her about anything. Her demeanor made you think that she was a very mean person, but she was really friendly. Her light green eyes accentuated her caramel colored skin. Her long black hair dangled just down her back. When she smiled, she had a slight overbite. The purple suit she had on made her look even more like royalty.

I gave her the full treatment. I showed her the girl's and boy's dormitories, the kitchen, the dining hall, the library, the gymnasium, and the playground. I even remembered to give her some of the background information about the orphanage. (I could have told her everything about the orphanage. I read a lot.) It was pretty cool giving her the tour.

We were walking back to Dr. Melez office; she began to ask me a lot of questions. She asked, "How do you manage to make straight A's all the time?" "I study all the time and always check and double check my work. I talk to my teachers and make that I am doing everything right," I replied. She kept on asking me more questions for the next few minutes, the she asked me if I wanted to come to her house one weekend. The word WHAT was all that I managed to mumble. She repeated the question again. I did not really know what to say, but after a few minutes I said, "Yea, that would be cool." I could not figure out what to do or how to act, but I suppressed my urge to scream for the moment.
